Cutting Edge Projects The Internet now makes it possible for anyone to download real-time data from scientific equipment, tap into sophisticated scientific databases, and even control advanced experimental apparatus. All that's missing is some guidance that allows those of us who aren't experts in the field to explore this exciting new world. Cutting Edge Projects provide the introductory information you need to utilize the tools and resources of today's prominent scientists and engineers, all made available to you over the Web. Whether you're a serious student who wants an exciting science fair project or an adult who just wants to have some fun, Cutting Edge Projects are for you. You can even ask for assistance with these projects on our Ask an Expert forum. Working with professional scientists and engineers who want to reach out to the public and share their work, Science Buddies plans to add more Cutting Edge Projects on a regular basis. In some cases, you can qualify for special awards by doing projects in these areas. If you're a scientific researcher, engineer, or computer scientist (university or corporate) who would like to submit a Cutting Edge Project, we're very interested in hearing from you. Please contact us at scibuddy@sciencebuddies.orgGenomics Genomics is the study of genes and their function by mapping, sequencing, analyzing, and modeling. In the classical study of genetics, genes are studied one at a time. Genomics aims to look at all genes together as a complex and changing system. Specialists in genomics hope that their discoveries will lead to innovative new ways to design diagnostic tests as well as therapies. The Molecular Sciences Institute (MSI) works at the forefront of genomics, and to encourage students to learn more about this exciting area MSI is sponsoring two awards:
$750 First Place Award, $250 Runner-up Award Science Buddies has several Cutting Edge Project ideas to get you thinking (you don't need to do these specific projects to be eligible for the awards). These project ideas utilize a wealth of genomic data and tools now available on the Web. Do you want to explore whether a dog is more closely related to a cow or a monkey? Do you want to understand how scientists use computers to evaluate the functions of proteins uncovered by the Human Genome Project, hoping to find new weapons in the fight against disease? Check out these projects: Astrophysics Want to use a NASA satellite as part of your science project? If you're in 7th grade or higher, this might be the project for you.Biology Biological diversity is a hot topic these days. This project for students in 7th grade and higher let's you explore biological diversity in your own home.Chemistry This terrific project outline is not truly "cutting edge", but for students who want to understand the basics of solutions, this is an excellent and thorough introduction that will be very helpful in coming up with a good science fair project involving the evaluation of colligative properties. This project is for students in 7th grade and higher. |
