Hepatoma cells are liver cancer cells. Like most cancer cells, they can be used for a variety of things in research including studying the differences between them and healthy liver cells. This allows scientists to develop better methods for detecting and treating this cancer (call hepatocellular carcinoma or HCC). There are likely other uses for these cells in research, but disease detection and drug discovery are likely the most common uses.
