Hello iloveabby,

Welcome to ScienceBuddies!
There are many applications in trying to figure out if an aluminum foil boat will float. Like in your example, you can compare how much "cargo" your aluminum boat can hold to a much larger boat of the same shape or proportion of cargo. In that way, you can analyze things like what the optimal shape of boat is, why boats can actually float even if they are made of metal, how density plays a role in determining whether a boat will float or sink, etc.

More information can be found in the link sent by MaheshM.

Good luck and feel free to write back with any more questions! :D
