Bacteria to grow in wastewater

Post by Kaourimarie27 »

I will be growing bacteria in wastewater to see if it can help in remediation of the wastewater. What would be a suitable type of bacteria (preferably bio-safety lvl 1) for this?

Hello,

This sounds like a very interesting experiment! For general wastewater treatment, bacillus and pseudomonas are bacteria that are great at decomposing organic matter and are widely used in municipal/ sewage plants. For more information on bacillus and pseudomonas, you may want to visit http://clrblu.com/water-treatment-equipment/microbes/. If you want a specific wastewater treatment application, Klebsiella pneumonia and Euplotes mutabilis are bacteria that have been found to remediate heavy metals from wastewater, as explained in detail on page 9 of this academic journal I found: http://www.academicjournals.org/journal ... E529A31916. The vast majority of bacillius are non pathogenic so should meet Biosafety Level 1 specifications. Also, Carolina biological supply is a good source to buy the bacteria!

Hope this helps,
Catherine M
