Diamagnetism and Eddy currents

Post by Pagliacci »

I have a one Troy ounce silver coin, and a copper coin. Both of these show magnetic drag when I move my large neodymium magnet near them. I also have a large chunk of bismuth, but when I run my magnet near it it creates no drag, but does repell a much smaller magnet tied to a thread.
My question is regarding the purity of my bismuth. Is bismuth supposed to exhibit magnetic drag, like copper, and silver?

Hi Pagliacci,

Is your question related to a science fair project? This forum is intended for students, parents, and teachers working on K-12 science projects. If you are looking for help with homework or general science discussions there are other sites that should be able to answer you question.
