Hi,

I am a little hesitant to recommend experiments to you since I am not sure if you are in a serious organic chemistry class/lab. I have not read Napolean Buttons, but understand it to be about the historical significance of 17 compounds - not an organic chemistry text.

With that proviso here are links to several experiments on organic nitro compounds:

http://www.books-about-california.com/P ... 6.html#170

http://www.quimica.ufpr.br/armo/experim ... nilina.pdf

http://designer-drugs.com/pte/12.162.18 ... bleach.pdf

While these probably will not blow up, they do involve use of somewhat hazardous materials, so be sure to be aware of the safety issues. Most of these are college level chemistry experiments.

Hope this helps!

Hey!

Here are a few experiments done in high schools, but they still involve materials that are not laying around the house.
