Cancer testing
Cancer testing
Hello,
I am doing a project about cancer, using a compound (my partner doesn't want me to say it) that is normally used intravenously. I was wondering how we could test this on cancer cells and where we could get these cancer cells from.
Re: Cancer testing
Hi,
Welcome to Science Buddies! This sounds like a great project. The best way to test a novel compound to see if it effective against cancer cells would be with cells grown in tissue…

Plant cancer
Plant cancer
Hi! My name is Tony and I am currently working on a science fair project with my partner. It is about finding a possible preventive anti-carcinogen for plant cancer caused by the Agrobacterium Tumefaciens bacteria (crown gall). I will first expose healthy bean plants to an anti-carcinogen extract (turmeric, oregano, and Vitamin C) and then give it the cancer. I will see the percent of plants that get prevented from the cancer. However, I have some questions about my…

KNN cancer diagnosis Adaptation (Breast Cancer / AI KNN)
KNN cancer diagnosis Adaptation (Breast Cancer / AI KNN)
I have already completed my first project on KNN and its application revolving Classifying cancer cells. However, this year I want to take it to the next level. To do this I want to not just classify the cancer cells as benign or malignant but instead classify them and cancerous or not. I have tried to accomplish this but in my research I have hit a dead end. So, I need a data set…

Ovarian cancer is a major cause of death worldwide. The novel anti-cancer drug diindolylmethane (DIM) has been shown in laboratory to inhibit the growth of ovarian cancer cells. New research published in BioMed Central's open-access journal BMC Medicine has looked at the action of DIM and showed that it works by blocking the activation and production of the transcription factor STAT3. DIM also enhances the anti-cancer effect of the platinum-based chemotherapy drug cisplatin.

In a study led by the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, researchers have identified nine new genes that drive the development of breast cancer. This takes the tally of all genes associated with breast cancer development to 40.
The mutated cancer-causing genes were different in different cancer samples, indicating that breast cancer is genetically very diverse. Understanding the consequences of this diversity will be important in progressing towards more rational treatment.

Detecting Cancer Cells
Detecting Cancer Cells
Hello everyone!
My partner and I saw an article about a dog having the ability to detect cancer. We want to find out whether the cancer cells are giving out a specific scent that only dogs can smell, or is it only a few certain dogs that have the ability to do so.
We are planning to experiment on this by growing our own cancer cells and have a few different dogs smell them and see if there is any reactions compare to normal cells.
Is this a…

Cancer cell experiments
Hi!
So I'm in the IB curriculum and I'm doing my extended essay on cancer cells and I have two scenarios. The first one is that I want to test whether cold temperatures affect the growth of cancer cells. The other scenario is that I want to test the effect of certain substances that affect the supply of cancer cells, affecting its growth. I realized that you need a certain growth medium to culture the isolated cancer cells and I heard that the…

pH and Cancer
pH and Cancer
Can having an acidic pH lead to cancer?
What effect does acidic pH have on cancer?
Re: pH and Cancer
Hi Joselle,
I am not completely sure if pH differences have an effect on cancer.
Let me tell you a little about pH in the body, for background. The body is separated into different organ systems, based on their function. The pH of the stomach is much lower than the pH in other parts of the body. Generally in the body the pH remains near 7 (in order for…

Hi Science Expert,
My name is Haarini and I have started thinking of an idea for my next year's science fair project. I have some questions pertaining to my idea which I have listed below so I can have an idea as to whether my idea is quite feasible or not.
- Do cancerous tumours that can be felt under the skin have blood flow through them and do lipomas (fat masses) not have blood flow through them?
- Can a lump felt on the skin be…
