Sample Projects from Advanced Competitions

Through the generosity of some past participants, we can make available actual research papers submitted to the Siemens Competition and the Intel Science Talent Search (STS).

Caution! These papers can give you a feel for what actual and successful submissions might look like; however, you should not expect to understand every detail they contain. Do not let a difficult paper scare you away. Each participant had to work hard to learn about and conduct research in his or her area. With equivalent effort, you can do the same.

Note: You should not use these past submissions as examples of how to format a document for future competitions. The rules are very specific and they may change!

Terik Daly was named a semifinalist in both the 2006-2007 Siemens Competition and 2006-2007 Intel STS for his paper on impact cratering.

Amber Hess was named a semifinalist in the 2004-2005 Siemens Competition and a finalist in the 2004-2005 Intel STS for her paper on a new technique in chromatography. It's not uncommon to achieve different results in different competitions. The judges, as well as the judging criteria, are different. Note that Amber's page total met the 2004-2005 rules, but may not meet the current rules. Later, after some additional research, Amber published her work in the Journal of Chemical Education. Note the many changes to make the article publishable.
