Race Your Marbles to Discover a Liquid's Viscosity
What was the most important thing you learned?
Well, I learned about viscosity, which at first, I didn't even know existed.
What problems did you encounter?
First of all, some liquids were WAY to fast to test, such as water, vinegar, vegetable oil, etc. So in order to accurately test liquids, I needed thicker ones. I used Suave shampoo and Tandil laundry soap instead. Problem was, I didn't know the density of those, so I had to look them up on the Internet. I couldn't find Tandil's density, so I had to find it my self. Not necessarily the easiest thing.
Can you suggest any improvements or ideas?
Add some thicker liquids to the list. But good project anyway.

To tell the truth I did not face any problems. I thank science buddies idea of this project because it took me all the to Gwinnett Regional Science and Engineering Fair in Atlanta Georgia 3rd place finish.

The most important thing that I learn was how the whole process works. As in how the bacteria digest the carbon material and use it to create its own metabolic activity to transfer electrons to the natural environment. I learned that your time IS LIMITED. START EARLY!

I had troubles finding many of the materials since I live in a very small community. And also understanding the whole concept of the process.

Explain more about how the process works. JUdges WILL crack down on that! Make sure they know that the judges for junior catagory are not as advanced as senior catagory. Information overload is VERY common. Explain the project well.

Absorption of Radiant Energy by Different Colors
What was the most important thing you learned?
The most important thing I learned was what science exactly is and how to come up with my own project. This was my first science fair project ever, so I didn't really know how to come up with a project. Now I have a much better idea of what science is and how I can explore and learn things on my own. This project was also a great background for physics, and I feel like I can now understand physics a lot better. I am even making some connections between this project and quantum physics, and it's really helping me understand everything.
What problems did you encounter?
The information from this project was based solely on my own personal research, so I had some misunderstandings of the information. In addition, I took this project to a higher level than the directions, so it required a lot of outside research.
Can you suggest any improvements or ideas?
It is actually a great project description. However, you might want to go a little more in depth about the background because I was kind of confused about the details.

I learned that anything is possible to make with a 2D paper. It is really incredible.

I ripped my paper the first time I tried to make something without instructions.

I've done origami for years and there really is so many possibilities. Think of a theme for what you will be making.

i think the difficulty should be moved up. i am in eighth grade and the project was perfectly suited to my knowledge and maturity or even lack there of. when i tried to test slightly younger subjects(of whom this project is supposedly tailored to) they got confused and wouldnt be capable of taking on a project such as this. i had to mvoe the age group of test subjects to a higher and therefore more mature as well as knowledgable age group.

The most important thing I learned out of this project was probability learning how a battery works. learning about voltage and circuts (on my free time, because of this project)was also very cool.

What was the most important thing you learned?
I won't give away what happens, but in order to get accurate results it is important to run a lot of trials and do them regularly and correctly. I learned a lot through other research about the importance of bioluminescence itself and how beautiful and natural it can be and I am very glad I used this project.
What problems did you encounter?
Organizing a uniform brightness scale was difficult, and maintaining the same temperature in the room that I was testing was an issue as well. Also, it's necessary to constantly be worrying about the health of the organisms while working--you have to change the growth solution regularly.
Can you suggest any improvements or ideas?
I would say that it IS difficult to keep all of the times straight and it is costly. You're not just purchasing the organisms, you're also buying growth medium, test tubes, medicine droppers, fluorescent lights, etc. So I would recommend it for anyone who is really willing to dedicate to it and work through the little issues. You will have fun with it. The bioluminescence looks like fiber-optics.

Weather. I tested some phones outside, and the weather affected the data.

I tested over twenty phones, text and call, and the distance. Nothing over 10 cm was recorded because nothing was emitted. I used Velcro to attatch a ruler to the meter, so it could slide up and down the ruler. Oh, and I won first place in my seventh grade science fair, and I am going to Science Congress. wish me luck!

I learned so much about the environment but it this project also taught me so much. It was hard but it payed of because I won first place in the science fair!

Sometimes it was hard to find the worms in the cup after the experiment had been sitting there and if I could not find the worm after looking for a long time I considered it dead. Hopefully that helps it is kind of confusing.

for the third test have them name the baby so you know what gender they think it is without giving it away that you are doing something with genders get more test subjects, smarter ones, older ones, I did this project with 5th & 6TH graders and ended up taking it to 20 year olds and they still had trouble circling 6 words and putting good combinations together

I wanted to weigh the iron for quantitative data. However, the iron was stuck to the bottle after 1 hour of drying. After scrapping the iron, I lost the sample. I reenacted the experiment and left the bottle over night to dry. This helped. However,the iron was still stuck to the bottle. After gently scrapping, the iron was retrieved in a whole piece. This was better than the 1 hour drying when the sample was completely lost.

If wanting to measure for quantitative data, be sure and rinse bottle well with distilled water after pouring sample. This will rinse the sugar our in hopes of eliminating the iron sample from being stuck in the bottle.

uhm at first i FORGOT. seriously forgot that if the volume is bigger then the more it floats. But what i did was i wanted to know what shaped boat holds the most weight(coins).so i made boats of the same volume but different shapes.i didnt listen to that ONE part of the instructions.

"Eco friendly" products definitely were not eco friendly. I paid 4x the price for the two "green" detergents, and it also killed 4x the worms.

Price was a bit of an issue.

One thing that I did change was the type of worm. I did not have around $30 for red worms, so I switched to mealworms, which was $8 for 500, and they live in the same ecosystem and conditions as red worms.

3 dead worms were found in this cup alone. And this Palmolive claimed to be "environmentally friendly", and have "no unnecessary chemicals or dyes". When I looked up the ingredients, it had very different chemicals than those found in the other three, and it did actually have dyes and fragrances in it.

I did not have enough plants to get a full spectrum of colors. Also, I had no way to test the Ph level of my tulips.

One very important improvement that would determine the difference between a working project, and a disfunctional project is putting your finger next to the ball and gently pushing it. It is an improvisation because then you just test how long the movement lasts.
