Computer Science/AI K-12 Content Developer (US Remote/Flexible Schedule)

Science Buddies (www.sciencebuddies.org) is a nonprofit that has reached a quarter billion K-12 students, parents, and teachers with resources that reflect the latest research in how to effectively teach STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). We offer unique tools and content not available from any other source. Highly personalized, we empower students to create individualized learning paths with easy-to-use tools that provide science and engineering projects, frameworks, and guidance. Our real-world, hands-on explorations are not only the best way to teach STEM, but they also make the subjects relevant to students, positively impacting academic achievement and nurturing student interest in STEM.
We are seeking a part-time computer science professional passionate about creating hands-on projects to inspire K-12 students to explore, understand, and apply artificial intelligence and coding to a wide range of topics. This is a unique opportunity to positively impact millions of students annually and shape the next generation's understanding and usage of artificial intelligence.
The computer science/AI content developer will be an integral member of the Science Buddies scientific team and play a critical role in the continued growth and maintenance of the science project ideas library and other K-12 resources. This position reports to the Vice President of STEM Education.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Create and maintain a roadmap of artificial intelligence and other computer science concepts and tools that can be made accessible to a K-12 audience.
- Conceptualize, test, and author original and engaging hands-on science projects for K-12 students with an emphasis on using coding and AI to explore a wide range of scientific questions or build software and/or embedded systems that appeal to students and span many different interests.
- Write AI, software, and programming-related tutorials and supporting content for K-12 audiences.
- Create videos to support and encourage students in trying artificial intelligence and coding.
- Collaborate with other science content team members as needed to create high-quality content including providing actionable peer-review of other team members' work.
- Keep up to date on emerging computer science tools and evaluate how they may apply to a K-12 audience.
- Review, revise, and update existing coding-related science content on the Science Buddies website to improve relevance and learning.
- Serve as a computer science subject matter expert as needed.
Desired Skills and Experience
While no one candidate may have all these characteristics, a strong candidate will have many of these qualities:
- A passion for explaining to others the potential of AI and how it works.
- BS or higher in Computer Science.
- Deep knowledge of AI topics including, but not limited to, neural networks, deep learning, and machine learning classifiers.
- Experience with a significant number of these tools: Python, MIT App Inventor, Jupyter Notebooks, Kaggle Notebooks, scikit-learn, Keras, PyTorch, TensorFlow, OpenCV, Caffe, and NLTK.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills including a demonstrated ability to make complex science and technology topics accessible and interesting for a general audience. A strong candidate will be able to share samples of relevant content they have authored.
- Hands-on, strong work ethic, and can-do attitude.
- Experience doing hands-on projects and/or coding with students as a mentor, volunteer, parent, or similar capacity.
- Videography skills are desirable.
Location and Work Hours
This is a part-time work-from-home position on a team that is fully remote. Applicants from anywhere in the United States will be considered.
Compensation
The estimated compensation for this position is $25/hr - $55/hr. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
