Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are complicated, and, quite frankly, poorly understood events. It is thought that CMEs occur when the Sun's magnetic field becomes "tangled" and disorganized. The CME is a result of the Sun working to restore it's magnetic balance.

This is a really interesting subject, and there is a lot of good information out there about CMEs. A couple of books you might find interesting are: The New Solar System (the author eludes me at the moment) and The Cambridge Guide to the Solar System. These books provide a basic introduction to CMEs and have references for further reading as well. Check to see if you can find them at the library. Of course, the internet is also a great place to look for information. Try Google, Yahoo!, or answers.com.
All the best,
