Does gender affect color preference?

Postby Kwooda » Sun Sep 19, 2021 1:57 pm

Hi my daughter is wanting to conduct an experiment regarding gender and color preference. Would you suggest a questionnaire or some type of manipulative as the testing mode?

Further would you suggest using only a group of same aged children or students from a multiple age groups.

Any all all help with the structure of this project would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Kwooda!

I would gladly guide you in the right direction for this experiment! For the testing mode, you could create a survey with only photos of colors and their different hues and let your sample choose their favorite, or what they like the most.

- I recommend using only colors and not colors of objects (blue bike or pink toy) because this may skew the participants to choose the object over the color.
- Once you get your results of chosen colors, you may create a pie chart dividing up the answers amongst each gender you've included in the experiment. You can then decide if your results match the hypothesis (what the student assumed would happen before the experiment was performed) and create a conclusion of your procedure and outcome.

- You may choose either group of people, the most important thing is that it is a random sample of people (make sure there is an equal amount of people in each gender) that is representative of a large group of people. Meaning, since you cannot survey all the same-aged children or all students, your experiment sample should include a smaller version, giving more accurate results. For example, if you have a group of 20 children with 10 boys and 10 girls, you can create a representative group in your experiment by surveying 10 students with 5 girls and 5 boys. I hope this is helpful! :D :D

Thank you so much for your reply. Would you suggest, asking the to choose only their favorite color or should they choose their top 2 or top 3 colors?

One more question. You said to make sure you had an equal number of boys and girls. Is that an equal number per age group or just an equal number in the overall study?
