Human Body

Post by Curious_mind »

So I have been conducting some research as my Grandfather has recently been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, and I am studying the human body and immune system in my Biology class. Anyway, today I came across a report on Timothy Ray Brown, it turns out that he had both Acute Myeloid Leukemia and HIV, and due to two stem cell transplants, he beat both of those 'diseases'. I was now wondering if it was possible to cure my grandfather using this same technique? I understand he will have to be CCR5 negative, or undergo a procedure to change from CCR5 to CCR5 negative. Or he may even have to be given HIV and then wipe out both at once. I was just trying to determine if it is possible for him to beat his Cancer with stem cell transplants??

Hi,

I am really sorry to hear about your grandfather. It is these experiences in our lives tyhat really do drive our interests into certain areas, and I know many cancer researchers who chose their field due to personal experiences.

Timothy Ray Brown's case was very unique. https://www.fredhutch.org/en/treatment/ ... -cure.html

He underwent standard treatment for the AML, but they chose a donor cell that was immune to HIV, with the idea it could wipe out his HIV, too, which it did - at least for now. This is experiemental work I don't think your grandfather would be able to take part in unless part of a clinical trial. Together, with his doctor, they could explore clinical trials he may be able to enroll in.

Anyway, the best sites for you to get your cancer info from are:
http://www.cancer.org/cancer/leukemia-a ... ent-of-aml

and

http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-cond ... n-20043431

It's great to have the info and understand as much as y9ou can about his cancer, but ultimately the treatment decisions are between him and his doctor. I am sure he would be happy to know you are so interested in his well-being.

Let me know if I can answer any further questions for you. I realize this is not likely part of a science fair experiement, but it may inspire one in the future.
