science fair project

Post by bparegi »

my 5th grader is doing his science fair project and his topic is do plants need fertilizers to grow? we went to lowe's looking for supplies yesterday-- we got miracle gro and for potting soil we were directed to potting soil with fertilizers in them. we considered digging up in our backyard just to retrieve good old potting soil but we have more clay than potting soil. any suggestions??

Hello and thank you for your question.

Did you try other stores, such as Home Depot or other gardening shops? They may sell some potting soils that don't have fertilizers added to it. However, instead of using regular potting soil, maybe you could try to use top soil as your base for this experiment. What I mean by that is you can plant everything in top soil and then add or not add fertilizer to it. Just let us know if you have any further questions.

Best,
