Hi,
Is your question in regard to an existing science project or are you thinking of doing a project? A little more detail would be helpful.

Volcanic areas can be extremely difficult places for plants to grow in the long term, but can develop into rich agricultural areas in the long term. For example, the Hawaii islands are actually made up of a series of underwater volcanoes. As long as the roots of a plant are able to obtain the necessary nutrients from a soil and other factors (sunlight, water), are satisfied, a plant can grow in a specific area.
