Initial soil sample 7.6. Organic matter 4.1
Watered experiment with five different fluids. Grew corn. Sampled the soil after five weeks and the pH went
Up in all. Why would the pH go up if watered with Vinegar mixture of 2.6
And apple juice with a ph of 4.6
Vinegar mixture soil went up to 8.9. And apple juice went up to 8.5. I don't understand the chemical reaction.
Thanks.

Re: Why did pH increase
Hi!
Welcome to science buddies!
Is this a science fair project?
You can read about pH with this link:
http://www.phadjustment.com/pH.html
The pH scale reads from 0-14, with the middle, 7, being neutral, and 0-7 being acidic and 7-14 being alkaline or basic.
When you add certain chemical solutions to soil, it will change the pH, but I think that the fact that you let it sit for 5 weeks has something to do with the fact that it didn't change in the way you expected. Many factors could have overridden the initial pH change with the vinegar and apple juice, such as temperature, environment, type of reactions that the corn has with the soil, etc... You can read more about this here:
https://www.finegardening.com/article/t ... ut-soil-ph
The nutrients in the soil could have also caused this.
I recommend you carry out some extensive background research so that you can better understand your project. Here's another source you can use:
http://landresources.montana.edu/nm/documents/NM8.pdf
If some of these sources are difficult to read and you need help, please let us know and we'd be happy to help you out.
Good luck and post again if you have any further questions!
Stay nerdy,
