Need help with helping my daughter with Earth Science Proj

Post by jdw7806 »

She want to do a project on what effect does freezing or boiling have on rocks. I'm looking for some examples.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
Welcome to Science Buddies. Are you seeking examples of how changes in temperature affect rocks in nature? Perhaps your daughter would be interested in the natural processes of mineral weathering. The freeze-thaw cycle is a major factor in weathering and landscape evolution. There are many web pages devoted to this topic. A different example would be geothermal waters, which can expose near-surface rocks to boiling temperatures.

I hope that helps. Please let us know if you have further questions.

Why are you looking at these effects?
What kind of 'rocks' are you interested in boiling and freezing? and why?

Please be careful boiling 'rocks'. Many commonly occuring rocks have arsenic, uranium, lead etc that can be harmful to your health.

This site may help you identify what type of rock you may have:

Although I know from experience that uranium ore is very hard to identify without a Giger counter. Your local fire department may be able to help you.

Good luck!
