Fluor 2018 Challenge questions

Postby snevets35 » Wed Mar 21, 2018 3:26 pm

Good afternoon,
I have a fabulous Grade 6 group who are having lots of fun (and learning sooooo much!) and we just have a couple of questions that we were hoping someone might be able to help us with.

1. If our machine uses elastics as part of the release mechanism, can the bands stretch over the 30cm base before releasing??

2. Can the receiver that will catch the ball, have a backboard attached to it?? The receiver itself will still be a stand alone component.

Thanks so much for your time. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Erin Voss and 6V

Hi Erin and 6V --

The submission window for the Fluor Challenge ended on March 16, 2018.

If you are doing this activity and using the rules for fun, then you can find the rules listed here:
https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... #procedure

There are also limitations on materials, which may partly answer your questions (e.g., maximum size of the rubber bands).

The rules cover both the building and the operation of the devices.

As for the receiver, there is no height limitation. But it must be freestanding, and you can only use the materials listed. (Remember that the materials used go into the calculation for your score.)

Have fun!

Amy
