building a hydrometer

We've tried to build a hydrometer with a straw and clay but the results to measure the salinity of water are not accurate. Any ideas as to how to build a hydrometer that would give us accurate results? Thank you!

A quick online search turned up a few ways to build a hydrometer. One example can be found here:

Once you've made a hydrometer, you have to calibrate it. Calibration instructions are included at the above link.
