Dear danasi5788,
In order to test the local river for pH levels, you can do so by filling small containers or cups with water and dipping a piece of pH paper into one or multiple container(s) or cup(s). Afterwards, you can compare the color on the pH paper(s) to a pH scale to see what the pH of the water is. Also, to test for pollution and bacteria, I think that getting a water testing kit, such as Earth Force Low-Cost Water Monitoring Kit from Carolina (https://m.carolina.com/environmental-sc ... /652567.pr) and Complete Water Testing Kit from WaterTestingKits.com (https://watertestingkits.com/product/co ... o_oid=7517) is a good option. In addition, you could contact a lab nearby and ask if it is willing to let you use the necessary equipment to test the water.
I hope this is helpful for you. If you have any questions or would like additional suggestions, please let me know.
