Electromagnetic Radiation

Post by Frances Anne »

hi. My project is: Do every day electronics such as your cell phone, TV, radio, etc. give off harmful electronmagnetic radiation, and does this radiation cause mutations in yeast. I talked to my teacher about my project and she said I need to find some kind of yeast that easily shows mutation. She also said she thought there was a kind of yeast that changes color when mutated. I searched the internet to try to find information about kinds of yeast I could use and wasn't successful, so if you could help me, that would be GREAT. I also wan't to know if there is a safe way for me to expose the yeast to radiation. One final question I had is: Is there a way to measure how much electromagnetic radiation an object gives off? Thank you sooooooo much for any help you can provide. If you could please get back to me asap that would be great. I need this information for this Tuesday!

You have selected a very interesting topic. The following sites may be of value to you.

These web sites discuss testing for mutations in yeast and other microorganisms. Some require subscription and others do not.
The Adobe file is a paper discussing the Ames test for mutations.

Thank you for your quick response and help. The sites you gave me were very useful. I have one more question. I was looking at the electromagnetic scanning systems, but couldn't find their cost any where. Do you have any idea how much they are? Are they of any reasonable cost for me to purchase or will I need to find someone to sponsor my project?

Electromagnetic Scanning Systems are extremely expensive, espcially the more accurate ones. They range from $100 to $500. You would definitely need to find someone to sponser your project. Perhaps you could find a science lab in your city that owns a electromagnetic scanning system, that you could borrow. Ask your teacher I am sure he/she would be of some help.

This site list meters for about $100. Your school/science department may be interested in sharing the cost for multiple classroom use.

This paper should answer some questions about mutagens mutations in micro-organisms, and the Ames test.
