Condensation

Post by Kingofhearts33 »

Sharon was driving when it started to rain. She noticed a layer of mist formed on the inner windscreen. She noticed a layer of mist forming on the inner windscreen of her car.

Question: What could Sharon infer about the temperatures inside and outside her car?
Answer in the answer key: She can conclude that the temperature in her car is higher than the temperature outside.

My doubts and confusion: What I do not understand about this question is that condensation takes placed when condensation takes place when water vapour condenses on cooler surface. Since the temperature in her car is warmer than outside, the inner windscreen is not cool. Why is there condensation taking place even though the surface is warm?

Hello Kingofhearts33,

Sorry for the late answer! Condensation actually takes place when warm air that contains moisture comes into contact with a cool surface. In the case of Sharon's car, her windscreen happened to the be cool surface on which the mist condensed. Therefore, you can conclude that the temperature inside Sharon's car is greater than that outside of her car, since condensation occurred on the inside.

Hope this helps!
