Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

Hi There.
I have a project where I have to answer this question
Why does Lightning come from the GROUND?? Explain.
I have no idea how is that possible. I have searched on Google but still confused.

P.S It is a project where they ask many confusing questions to get perspective of students.

jackj_32 - Actually lightening can travel from atmosphere to earth, earth to atmosphere or cloud-to-cloud. No simple 'one size fits all' explanation. There are a lot of sites you can find on the web that will describe the charge build-ups that explain how these different phenomena occur. Good luck in researching.
