My 5th-grade daughter would like to do one of the eddy current projects listed on this website.

She is fascinated by the concept and has been reading up on the subject. What she is having a problem with is expanding on the question for the experiment. The original question is which material does the magnet pass through the fastest and why? She wants to expand on that and I was wondering if any one can share any material for her to read through.

It's great that your daughter is so interested in the topic and wants to learn more! First of all, the project itself has a "make it your own" tab which suggests several variations on the project, including using different conductors (aluminum or brass tubes, for example) or using a different diameter of pipe. In addition, these resources may help her learn more about electricity and magnetism:

I would also suggest using the Science Buddies Project Ideas tab to look up other projects involving magnets/maglevs, which might spark some ideas about how to expand on the question (look in the background sections of these projects, which often contain information as well as links to other informative websites on the topic). In addition, the internet has many great resources which you might consult; a simple google search about "eddy currents explained simply" or magnetic levitation should yield abundant reading material. There are also a number of other sources available explaining the concept.
