December 8, 2005 - Concord, CA – A free workshop entitled "Create a Winning Science Fair Project" will be held this Saturday, December 10, 2005, from 9am to 12:30pm at the Concord High School Tech Center at 4200 Concord Blvd. in Concord. The workshop welcomes 7th – 12th grade students and teachers. The workshop will be conducted by Karen Kelly, a biology teacher from Clayton Valley High School and a member of the organizing committee of the new Contra Costa County Science and Engineering Fair that will be held at Heald College & Conference Center in Concord on March 30, 31 & April 1 of 2006. The workshop will open with a brief talk by De La Salle high school student David Bray who was one of the top five finalists at the regional level of last year’s Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, a prestigious science competition. David researched the degradation of eight creeks in the Walnut Creek area. He will give students ideas and tips on how to develop a good research project. The workshop will also include presentations by experienced local teachers who will display examples of past winning projects as well as projects that had weaknesses or were disqualified. Dr. David Fergenson of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Danielle Dell, Advanced Placement Statistics Teacher at Clayton Valley High School, will discuss how to interpret and summarize research data. Dr. John C. Howe, Director of the Mathematics & Science Academy at Presentation High School in San Jose, will present a list of science fair Do's and Don'ts as well as an overview of rules and the judging process.
