continued: saturated fat

AFTER you've done your research and concluded your experiments, it is time to prepare for the science fair. Ask specific questions about preparing for a science fair, including how to set up your display board, how to prepare a presentation, etc. (Please post questions about selecting a project or conducting your experiment by posting in the appropriate "area of science" forum.)

Project Question: <saturated fat level in different type of a cooking oil>
how do we find the saturated fat level, what do we have to use in order to find the level, in high school level.

saturated fat level in different types of cooking oils

Post by wlsdud4000 »

how to find and measure the saturated fat level of the cooking oils (in a high school level)?

(we wish we could get the answer as fast as we can, since our research plan is due tomorrow before 2 PM, so thank you!!) :D

that is the question i asked and we wish we could know this also:

in this website we could see the % of the saturated fats of each type of oil, the question is that, how are we supposed to get the % of the saturated fat level.
:D thank you!!^^

Hi,

Here is one idea for measuring saturated fat in a science fair experiment:

http://www.all-science-fair-projects.co ... t_1143_129

This experiment really measures unsaturated fats by reaction with iodine, so you are really inferring the amount of saturated fat.

Here us a Google book review that will let you read a survey of professional chemistry techniques for measuring saturated fats. Note that the page will let you locate a library from which you can borrow the book(left panel, scroll down past the book vendors):

http://books.google.com/books?id=JM-R91 ... at&f=false

You might also find this link on the analysis of lipids to be of use:

http://www-unix.oit.umass.edu/~mcclemen/581Lipids.html

You should also look at this Science Buddies project idea on testing fats:

https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p062.shtml

It is highly related to the top link above on measuring saturated fats.

I think these links will get you started on finding the answer to your question, though you may have to do some more serious research if you are serious about really learning about this question.

Good luck and have fun with it!!

Best regards,
