Hello!
I am doing my 10th grade science project on which chemical will make an instant cold pack last the longest (or which chemical will make a cold pack the coolest). I was just wondering which chemicals you think would work the best for this project? Please respond as soon as possible.
Thank you so much!

Re: Cold Pack Chemistry
Hi gabbity,
My suggestion is to use ammonium nitrate. It’s readily available and used in some kinds of cold packs.
There is a Science Buddies project in which you find out how the temperature varies in different solutions of ammonium nitrate in water. You may be interested in the project or in the background information included in the description:

Ammonium nitrate and some other chemicals have endothermic enthalpies of solution. That is, the solutions cool when the chemicals dissolve. The following link shows a few enthalpies of solution and some additional background information that may be useful to you:

I hope this helps. Please post again if you have more questions.

Hi gabbity!
You can also use substances like rubbing alcohol or corn syrup in addition to ammonium nitrate for cooling packs. Another way you can approach your experiment is too see how long these different substances will allow the cooling pack to stay cold. Here's a website that I found that gives you instructions on how to make the cooling packs: http://www.themakeyourownzone.com/2013/ ... packs.html
Good luck with your project!
