Helicopter above the earth.

Post by Patrick456 »

My 10 year nephew would like to know what would happen if you hovered for 24 hours on a helicopter without moving forward. Would you stay above the exact spot, or would the earth pass below you??

Patrick456 - The helicopter would tend to move with the atmosphere, and the helicopter would stay above the same position relative to the earth in a 'no wind' situation. Have your nephew search for 'coriolis effect' and the effect of moving bodies with paths that deviate from the rotation of the earth.
