chrizguitars - I suggest your first step is to understand what a hypothesis is (see Science Buddies info or Google for definitions), then understanding the observable relationship between sugar content and refraction as described in the Science Buddies experiment. The laser pointer is simply a tool to help you measure refraction in these various concentrations of sugar.

The Science Fair Project Ideas intentionally don't provide a hypothesis. Each investigator needs to come up with their own hypothesis in order to make it THEIR OWN science fair project. Most of the project ideas are presented so that there a multiple hypothesis possible that can significantly customize the project.
