Google Science Fair

Hello,
My school is having their high schoolers compete in the Google Science Fair which is a new thing to me, previously for science fairs our school would have us go through the process of going through school wide fairs, then regional, state, and if our project really great one of us might be able to go to the international fair sponsored by Intel (ISEF), but they've changed it to all high schoolers are to participate or compete in the Google science fair without going through the process mentioned before. I've been to the Google Science Fair website but I was wondering if anybody could give me more info on it. Do you know anybody that competed in the previous years?
