I am doing a experiment on optical illusions. Can you please tell me if a different gender can be my independent variable?

What exactly are you trying to learn from your research? what is your question or hypothesis? What is your dependent variable - i.e., the variable you are trying to predict?

An independent variable is a variable that can influence your dependent variable. So, if gender can influence your dependant variable it would be an independent variable.

If you could give a few more details about your project maybe we could answer your question better.
