Acid Rain and Carbon Footprinting

I would like to have an environmental scientist answer my questions regarding acid rain or carbon footprint.
1) Due to the advancements in new technology, how much of an impact will the hybrid vehicles make in CO2 reduction? How many vehicles(estimated) would have to be driven to reduce the CO2 emissions or even have an impact?
2) If coal burning power plants, iron and steel companies, and crude oil processing plants are responsible for producing the majority of CO2 and NOx gases, is there any way that the gases they produce be sent through an air filtration process before being released into the atmosphere? If so, why is this process not being used?
3) How long have you been in your field of study? What event in your life helped you in your decision to obtain a degree in this field of science?
Thank you in advance for your help
