Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

Hi, I've been looking for a science project for some time now and I'm been hoping to do the experiment of "Which will most affect tooth decay pure citric acid or citric acid found in various citrus fruits?". The problem is I do not have an effective way to measure the tooth decay! Any suggestions?

Your question is quite similar to those of some other people on the Forums. Take a look at the following topics, where you will see a few perspectives about measuring tooth decay. One option is the penetration depth of a needle, another option might be to track changes in mass, if you have a sensitive enough balance. The advice given in these posts is very good.

I've also included posts about teeth substitutes, in case you don't have access to human teeth. If you are planning to use human teeth, check with your teacher to see if you need to fill out special forms for permission. Many science fairs require this for safety reasons.
