Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

I am doing an experiment on whether ants are attracted more to brown or white sugar. What do you think the outcome will be? Also,why are ants attracted to sugar?

It looks like you have an interesting idea for a science fair project. I certainly can't tell you whether ants will be more attracted to white or brown sugar (that's the whole fun in doing the project in the first place). I suggest that you start by researching how ants smell (how do know where food is located, follow trails left by other ants, etc.). You should also research the differences between white sugar and brown sugar to help you form a hypothesis before beginning the experiment. And, don't forget that you'll need a control also. Perhaps you should dissolve the sugars in water (making sure that they have equal concentrations) and have plain water as your control.
