Hi all.
IS diabetes is always genetically predisposed? I am asking this as my grandfather was just diagnosed with t2 diabetes few days ago. This puts me in the line, doesn't it? Is there a way to check if I'm going to get diabetes as well? Anything other than regular measuring of blood sugar?
Thanks.

Hi Andrew - no, there is more than one type of diabetes and they are not both inherited. Perform a web search for the word "diabetes" and see what you get. I found this good site: http://www.diabetes.org/ From there, click on "Diabetes Basics" - and it will answer the questions you have.

Let me know if you have trouble finding what you need.

Thanks,
Tonya

Hi. Thanks for replying. Well I did a little research on my own and this is what I came up with. Hope this comes in handy to others as well.

Type 1 ( insulin- dependent diabetes ) occurs in childhood and youth (mostly in puberty) or before the age of 30. It is an autoimmune disease. Its probably genetic. The chance that a child whose either parent is diabetic inherites type1 diabetes is 2 to 5 percent. If both parents are diabetics, the chance can be as high as 30 percent. Treatment with insulin is necessary since the first day of diagnosis as insulin needs to be injected/replaced until the rest of your life. About 10% of diabetics has type 1 diabetes. Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes - about 90 % of all diabetics has type 2. It is likely to be of genetic origin too. Here's a list of blood sugar levels that are considered normal, low or high.

Type 2 is not about lack of insulin, but the resistance to its function (you can even have too much of insulin, if you're type2). Insulin resistance increases with age (if it's hereditary). Hyperglycemia is moderate at first but its intensity increases. Appropriate diet and diabetic pills are the way to treat t2. At the same time it is necessary to treat the problems that occur in parallel (increased blood sugar, increase in blood fat, hypertension). It is also a good idea to reduce body weight, if it is too high and to stop smoking. Over the years, patients blood sugar levels may reach levels so high, that treatment with insulin injections is needed. Inadequate diet, obesity, lack of exercise and stress all contribute to development of diabetes type2.

I am still worried though. Better talk to my doctor about all this and see what he has to say about it.

/edit Fixed typos.

Excellent summary.

Yes, anytime you are worried, talk to your doctor abotu it. Did you notice the roles good nutrition and exercise play in prevention and management of diabetes (and other conditions as well)?

Forgot to update this thread. I've talked to my personal doctor (who knows our family) and he told me not to be worry at all. There is no way I can influence on whether I will get diabetes or not. He told me to eat healthy and do sports often. As far as measuring blood sugar levels - I will do the test next month, so we will see how my blood sugar rises / drops after eating carbohydrates.
