Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

My project is on Warped Words and Stroop Effect and im having problems finding my constants in the project. My materials are a 1. A computer with color printer 2. Five sheets of cardstock 3.Five envelopes 4. Stopwatch 6. Volunteers to take a simple color-naming test. Help Please.

I'm a little confused as to what you mean by your "constants" in this experiment. Are you referring to the dependent and independent variables in the experiment? If you are following the exact procedures as in "Warped Words and Stroop Effect", I would say your independent variable (what you change) is basically the warping of the words (for example, rotating the word, changing the shape of the word, etc.). Your dependent variable would be what you observe, so essentially the time it takes for your volunteers to finish naming the words. Other experts, please correct me if I am wrong!

Connie has already provided some great advice. If by "constants" you are referring to your "controls," then you want to consider that you want to keep all conditions the same from trial to trial, except for the variable you are manipulating (the warping of the words). The primary control you have is that you should give the exact same test to every subject, with the exception that the words can be in a different order.
