Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

Hi, I was wondering if there are any medical careers that also have to do with nature. I am interested in health and biology but I don't really like the idea of being a doctor because I'll have to be inside a lot of the time. Are there any science/medical careers that are outdoors? Thank you.

Why don't you become an ethnobotanist? Then you can talk to native people in various countries and find out what plants they use for medicine. You might actually find some plant that is highly effect against a disease like cancer but which conventional medicine does not know about. An ethnobotanist has to know botany, anthropology, biology, medicine, physiology, and chemistry to test the plant extracts in the lab but they also get to spend a lot of time outdoors trekking through jungles, up mountains and into remote villages. The natural habitats of medicinal plants and the shamans who know how to use them properly are rapidly disappearing and you could be one of the last people to find out about a wonderfully effective plant extract before it is too late.

If you wanted to focus on a career with animals you could always study to be a veterinarian! There are two distinct types, small animal and large animal. There is a great need for large animal veterinarians today, in which you would work with mostly farm animals such as cows, horses, sheep, ect. The job involves traveling to different areas to examine the animals (since it would be difficult to bring a cow into a doctor's office) and so this could be a way you could stay in touch with nature.
I recommend looking up the job description and the schooling required, as the school track is similar to getting a degree as a doctor.

A couple of careers I know of include the following:
1. Environmental Health Practitioner- they often measure the amounts of contaminants that are in the air, water, and soil. They also measure noise and radiation levels or design solutions that would reduce pollutants. The job outlook for them is very good and they most often become specialized and most commonly become air quality specialists, soil specialists, and radiological assessors.
2.Forensic Biologist- They may not make the best salary but their work sounds interesting to me. They examine blood and other bodily fluids, hair, bones, insects, plant and animal remains to help identify victims and help criminal investigations.
3. Toxicologist- They carry out lab and field studies to evaluate the impact of toxic materials and radiation on human health, animal health, and the environment.
