Exercise and heart rate recording results

My daughter is looking at how different exercise effects heart rates.
She is measuring resting heart rates of 7 participants. She is then measuring their heart rate at 1 min, 2,5,10 and 15 min intervals doing a variety of different exercises.
She is keeping as many variables controlled as possible such as speed, difficulty level, time of exercise etc.

The problem is the best way to record all this data.
Do you do a table and graph for each exercise or each participant. Is there a way to incorporate it all into one table?

She understands there are variables that are hard to control and will discuss in her report. Are there any other things she should be aware of?
Kind regards
Dollbird

HI - that is a vey interesting project.
Does she have the background information and protocol for this experiment? did she check the Science Buddies Project ideas. The following is good:

https://www.sciencebuddies.org/science- ... p006.shtml

Let me know more about what she decides to do and I can offer guidance.

Good luck!

Hi there,
Thanks for posting your question on science buddies. Before answering your question, I would like to know how your daughter measures the heart rate. is it beats per mintue (bpm)? It is importnat to outline the method you use.

As how to present your data, I would suggest that you can take the average of the heartbeat of those 7 participants (standard deviation may also be useful).
It should be sufficent to draw any meaningful conclusion .

I Hope it helps.

Hello there,

Very cool project! Just out of curiosity, what is the main question your daughter wants to answer? Is it along the lines of how heart rates are different when people do different types of exercises? You mentioned that you have 7 participants--do you make all 7 do all the different types of exercises, or do you have different people doing different exercises? What kind of exercises are your participants doing? If you have your 7 participants doing all the exercises, do you give them enough time to rest in between different exercises to get their heart rate back to resting to ensure that any changes in heart rate in the next exercise wasn't due to the previous exercise? As for the times when you take the measurements, do you have your participants do the exercise for 15 minutes, and measure their heart rate at different time points during those 15 minutes? If you give us a little more detail about your experimental method and how you're collecting your data, we can provide more helpful feedback on the best way to organize and present your data!

Best,
Connie
