New Project: Xylem Filters

Hello,
I am starting a new project and currently making my methods. I need materials that are 10 nm-100nm in size. I am currently using food coliring because the particles are about 30 nm-100 nm. I need a material that is inexpensive (30 dollars or less) and is 10nm-30 nm and another material that is 50 nm-90 nm in size. These would be used to filter through the xylem filters.

Hi,

In order to answer questions relating to a science project accurately we need you to tell us about the project. What is your hypothesis? What experiments do you plan to do and what are your methods?

You said you need particles that are 10-30 nm in diameter and 50-90 nm. Do they have to be colored? You did not say how much you need which would affect the cost. Have you called the company that makes the food coloring to ask if they have any products that are in the size range you want?

It is possible to make your own nanoparticles but you would need access to a university lab. There are still questions about the potential hazards to humans of certain kinds of nanoparticles and their use is regulated. We use an FDA-approved polysaccharide called chitosan to make nanoparticles in the range of 50-100 nm but it is possible to make smaller ones. There are also organic chemicals like poly-lactic co-glycolic acid (PLGA) that can be used to synthesize nanoparticles.
