Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

Hi,

I'm planning on doing a science fair project that tests the effect of type and amount of radiation on human skin cells. I was wondering if you could help me find some labs that have access to machines that could expose cultures to ultraviolet radiation, radiotherapy radiation, x-ray radiation, and radiofrequency radiation.

I also need help figuring out some of the details of my project.

This sounds like a wonderful science fair experiment, but you will definitely need to have a lab that you can work with. I recommend looking on the websites of universities in your area for professors doing research in this area. You can email these professors to see if it would be possible for you to receive help with your experiment and access/help on the proper equipment. You will be much more likely to receive a positive reply if you have a strong plan for your experiment and a fairly long timeline when you contact the labs. For example, if you need to get your experiments done in a couple of weeks, they are unlikely to be able to help you. In previous posts, other experts have also suggested talking to your science teacher, since they may have contacts who can help you.

As for help figuring out some of the details of your project, we would be happy to help you, but it would be much better if you could post some specific questions/problems you are having, so we know what sort of help you need. You will also get help from your lab/mentor when you find him or her.
