Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

I am doing a research project involving gene expression and one aspect of my project requires Amazonia, a microarray platform, to work. However, the link to Amazonia does not work and searching it up online did not work. Is there another microarray tool other than Amazonia that will allow me to track the profiling of genes?

I'm sorry that the Amazonia site is not working. I don't know what the problem is.

What kind of data are you searching for? The National Center for Biotechnology Information, NCBI, has a web tool called Gene that allows you to search for specific proteins and DNA sequences associated with human diseases: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/gene

The NCBI database may be able to give you the info you need, but if not there is also a European version of Gene called UniPRot (http://www.uniprot.org/help/uniprotkb) that allows you to search for almost any combination of genetic features. Using the search strings can sometimes be confusing, so let us know if you have any questions.

I am primarily looking at variants of integrin subunits and its expression level on different cell types (liver or pancreas cells for example). The microarray data will allow me to see to what extent the genes are being expressed, which, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think I am able to see that on NCBI.

OK. So are you saying that the only way you can GET the microarray data is through the Amazonia website?

Maybe one of the other experts or moderators has some information about why the Amazonia site is offline.

You can find articles about integrin expression in various types of tissue on PubMed but this could take a long time:
