I'd say any discovery that leads to a better understanding of the world around us is a contribution to science. Science is all about figuring out why things are the way they are. Finding out which surface of a Popsicle melts faster may not seem like an important discovery, but it can serve as evidence for scientists researching a bigger idea. Maybe, with the data from melting a Popsicle, they can predict how glaciers will melt due to global warming, so they can be better prepared for that event if it happens.
