An independent variable is one that *you* manipulate to see what the effect is. The dependent variable is the result of that change. So for example, imagine I want to test whether adding salt makes ice cream taste better. I might set up 2 cups of ice cream - one that has salt added to it and one that doesn't. I'll ask a few willing people to taste each of them and see which one they like better.
In this experiment, I added the salt, so that's the independent variable. Whether people like the salted ice cream better or not is the dependent variable, or my result. In your experiment what *one* thing will you be changing and what is the result you're watching for? Those will be your independent and dependent variables.
Incidentally, in a perfect world *everything else* would stay exactly the same and those are your constants, controls or control variables. In the real world that's hard to do but certainly try to keep things the same as much as you can.
