There is equipment to remove iron and other impurities from water but it is a large piece of equipment with many and complicated stages. Is it possible that they overlooked a simpler possible solution? Could you manipulate the water to form magnetic iron oxide (magnetite, Fe3O4) which could be removed by magnets placed along the shafts leading to the surface and therefore removing the iron? I look forward to and appreciate any answer/opinion!

Even if your idea works, one would need to deal with all the "Other impurities". This is what makes the process complicated. For example bacteria needs to be removed with UV light since filtering is not effective.

It's always a good idea to think about a simpler way to solve an already solved problem. I like your thinking.
