Science Buddies: "Ask an Expert"

My science teacher says that the interview with the judges add points to my score, which of course is important. The problem is that the last science fair I did I could not answer the question the judge asked without stuttering or correcting myself even if my science fair project was conducted and displayed correctly. What can I do to prevent that from happening again and how can I prepare for it?

Oral communication is an important way we explain our results, in science, and in many other fields. You can do better at this by practicing. Write out a list of the questions you expect a judge will ask you - some of these will be answered on your poster, but some might not be. You can even show your friends your poster ahead of time and get them to ask you some questions. Then prepare the answers (short, 1-2 sentences) to each question, and then practice saying them. You might want to memorize the most common questions/answers, or you might practice so many times that you will have almost memorized them!

I completely understand your situation here. I did have the same problem too before. All you have to do is stay calm and cool . To help you here are some tips for a successful science interview:

The way I got around it was just to do hardcore research on the project which I was doing. If you know the facts then you are good to go. However never stutter on your interview otherwise the judge would probably think that you did not do the project and you had a lot of help. This is the last thing that you would want the judge to know. If you know most of the information in the science buddies page about your project and about whatever you are doing then you are going to good. As long as you have an answer, then it is good. The judge is really looking for your knowledge about your project. Even if you make stuff up based on facts then you will still get the points.
