Boosting the range of a WiFi router

Hello good people of Science Buddies! My name is JarvisVB and this is my first post here.
To keep things short I will go straight to the point. I am undertaking a self-influenced project which involves boosting of the range of a WiFi router as the title says. Starting up, I have read and and understood how WiFi routers and networks work but obviously that is not enough for the project I am undertaking. I am aware that topics such as modulation and the inner workings of the antenna cannot be underestimated in the scope of the project. I would like to know what other topics would be necessary and if possible, the links to them from where I can read even more.
I plan to combine the advantages of various WIFI standards into a whole new standard, reworking some hardware parts to improve efficiency or creating a powerful transceiver, however, proposed approaches to this project would be very much appreciated.
Thank you for your time!
