Refractive Index

Hi All,
I am currently doing a physics project in Australia. I am using one of the science buddies idea and is looking for a relationship between the refractive index and the concentration of sugar solutions for different concentrations. I am having trouble finding a glassware that i can hold my solution in without it refracting the laser beam too much. Is there any way that i can measure the angle of refractions without passing the ray through the glassware?
I had also read texts where they say the optical density is not the same as the physical density of the substance. Can anyone explain this to me please?
Thank you.
