How to determine what is wrong with an electric pump motor.

My dad and I realized that the pump motor on the spa would start up and run for a few minutes then automatically shut off. We later determined that while the pump was running it became very hot and at that point the motor would shut off. Once the motor had cooled it would automatically start up again. History on the pump: The pump is a four horse power eletric motor which runs on 240 volts. The pump is between 3-4 years old and has less than 300 hours of operating time. The only physical problem with the pump is that the shaft attached to the pumps housing has a split on what appears to be a plastic spacer between the housing and the pump. We are trying to determine if the problem is a faulty motor, silinoid, diode, resistor, bearings or bushings. Can anyone help us? :?

Hi Cody!

You can try submitting "why do electric pump motor fail?" to answers.com, and see if any of the web results pages help out. Note, you may need to tweak the wording for best results.

I'm sorry this posting is past your deadline, so it may not help.
