How can I build a wire recorder using old telephone receiver and transmitter?

Does anyone know how to make a wire recorder following Valdemar Poulsen's original wire recording experiment? You can see a diagram of how historians think it worked here: https://books.google.ca/books?id=PdruCA ... &q&f=false

The main issue I've encountered when following this model is with playback. I've been using parts from a 1901 Kellogg phone (receiver and transmitter). You can see that the transmitter is leaving a magnetic trace alone the wire (because iron filings stick to it after you've run the electromagnet along it while yelling into the transmitter), but so far I haven't had any luck with hearing anything playback in the receiver. Is it because there is some information missing from the diagram I included in the link above? Maybe there was something that Poulsen was using to amplify the sound? I'm a humanities student/teacher, so I may not know if something is missing because I don't understand all the engineering aspects of this experiment. I see that the directions for this experiment calls for an audio amp, but I'm not sure they would have had any amplification system back then, at least not like we do now. Plus the diagram doesn't seem to call for one.

Anyways, I realize this is a bit of a long shot, but whatever you can tell me would be very helpful.

Hi Kathranan,

It's neat that you're so interested in this wire recording experiment. These forums are specifically for K-12 students, parents, and teachers working on a science fair project. Consequently, a different set of online forums will be better able to help you. That said, Science Buddies does have a version of a recording on a wire project that you might find helpful:
