An independent variable is something that you change in order to observe (or measure) a response in a dependent variable. Take a look at the following link for more detailed descriptions and examples of variables.

The procedure part of the project directs you to prepare five different cups for your experiment. What are you changing here? This is your independent variable. What are you measuring in the experiment? This is your dependent variable.
